How to choose the right tog rating
🌡️ Match tog to your room
- 16-20°C: 2.5 tog, 100% organic cotton, covers most NZ nurseries through autumn, winter and spring
- 20-24°C and above: 1.0 tog, a bamboo and organic cotton blend for extra breathability
- Warmer still: keep the 1.0 tog bag on and dress in lighter layers underneath, rather than sizing down on tog
🛡️ Checking your baby is comfortable
- Check the back of your baby's neck for warmth, not their hands or feet, which are always cooler
- Damp or hot means take a layer off
- Warm and dry means you've got it right
FAQs
Your questions answered
What does tog mean on a baby sleeping bag?
Tog measures how much warmth the fabric holds in. The higher the number, the warmer the bag. It tells you which room temperature the bag is designed for, so you can choose based on your baby's actual room rather than guessing.
What tog rating do I need?
It depends on your room temperature, not the season. Use the 2.5 tog bag for 16-20°C, and the 1.0 tog bag for 20-24°C and above. Every bag comes with a room thermometer and tog guide included, so you can check as you go.
Why is the 1.0 tog bag made differently to the 2.5 tog bag?
The 1.0 tog bag uses a bamboo and organic cotton blend, chosen for extra breathability in warmer rooms. The 2.5 tog bag is 100% organic cotton, suited to cooler temperatures where you want more warmth held in.
When can I start using a sleeping bag for my baby?
From day one, with the Sweet Dreamers Sleep and Swaddle Bag. It works as a swaddle first, arms in, for the newborn stage. Once your baby starts showing signs of rolling, usually somewhere between 8 weeks and 4 months, you simply unzip the sides for arms out. No need to buy a separate swaddle and sleeping bag. Read more on swaddle vs sleeping bag timing.
When should my baby stop using a sleeping bag?
There's no set age. It comes down to mobility and fit, not a birthday. Once your baby is climbing or trying to walk while wearing it, a sleeping bag can become a trip hazard, and it's time to size up or transition out. Check the sizing on your specific bag as your best guide, since babies outgrow at different rates.
Are baby sleeping bags safe?
Yes, when sized correctly and fitted properly. They're safer than loose blankets because there's no loose fabric that can cover your baby's face. Ours are also tested to British safety standard BS EN 16781:2018.
Is all organic cotton the same?
No. "Organic cotton" on its own isn't a regulated claim, and plenty of budget and mass-market brands use the term without third-party testing behind it. GOTS certification checks the entire supply chain, from farming through to the finished product. OEKO-TEX tests the finished fabric against a list of over 1,000 substances that could be harmful to health. Sweet Dreamers is certified to both. That's a real difference from an "organic cotton" label with nothing behind it.
What does organic cotton actually mean for my baby's sleeping bag?
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers or GMOs. But without independent certification, there's no third-party check that a brand's "organic cotton" claim is actually true. GOTS certification verifies the cotton is genuinely organic and ethically manufactured, right through the supply chain. OEKO-TEX tests the finished fabric and confirms it's free from harmful substances.
Is this safe for babies with sensitive skin or eczema?
Yes. Sweet Dreamers sleeping bags are hypoallergenic, made without the harsh chemicals and residues that can trigger reactions in sensitive skin. This is backed by GOTS and OEKO-TEX certification, so it's not just a label claim, the fabric has been independently tested to support it.
When can my baby switch from a swaddle to a sleeping bag?
Once your baby shows signs of rolling, they need to stop being swaddled with arms in. This is when most parents move to an arms-free sleeping bag.
How do I wash and care for it?
Machine wash on cold, and either tumble dry on low or line dry. This keeps the fabric soft without breaking down the fibres over time.
